Citizen Stream Monitoring Program
Citizen Stream | Citizen Lake | Volunteer Data Entry

Involvement in the Citizen Stream Monitoring Program (CSMP) is open to any individual or group willing to donate time to conduct a simple weekly stream assessment.  The CROW will provide volunteers with a transparency tube, rain gauge, data sheets and instructions.  Volunteers select their own monitoring site within the Crow River Watershed and collect a sample once a week from April to October (and following large rainfall events when possible). Volunteers are also asked to record rainfall daily.

Volunteers participating in the program are part of a state wide monitoring program established by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).  The data collected by the volunteers indicates improvement or degradation in the river system, assists local planners in prioritizing areas for projects and research, and increases the public’s awareness of water quality issues.  This program takes very little time yet provides valuable data.  It’s also a great outdoor educational project for kids and adults.
